VOLT goes places!

Miguel doing thumbs-up at the Danish embassy in Korea

While most PhD students decide to go abroad for their change of scientific environment, I decided to do something different. As researchers, we tend to forget that our research can have real-world applications; this fact is often overlooked during university education in Life Sciences. I learned a bit about innovation during my master’s degree and I wanted to explore this option further. This is why I joined the first edition of the Pathways program, an intensive, 7-week course on innovation, organised by KU’s SCIENCE Innovation Hub. Here, I learned to bring my research-based ideas into the real world and build a start-up to develop my idea into a viable business. On the 7th week, we went on a study trip to South Korea to visit the Innovation Center Denmark in Seoul and learn more about the thriving start-up ecosystem in South Korea.

Overall, the program was a great experience, and I am very happy to see that KU is starting to put more emphasis on research based innovation! If you’re unsure of where you’re going to go for your change of environment and you have an innovative idea with great potential, or if you just want to learn about the start-up world, you can find more information here:
